There are many industry-promoted certifications for environmentally friendly paints, which evaluate product performance, emissions, and content - typically resulting in the achievement of a specific level of certification. For most consumers, however, there is no easy way to understand what a particular certification really means, or how it relates to everyday life. Further, many industry critics complain that the certifications serve the industry rather than the public. In general, the better certifications are those which focus on product ingredients (like ingredient lists on food labels) especially those which indicate that a product does not contain ingredients of concern.
